I remember as a young girl that I adopted the prairie vernacular of Laura Ingalls; my family tolerated it, my friends teased me and my teachers were appalled. The protagonist in this tween book speaks like her favorite characters in Pride and Prejudice and Anne of Green Gables, although she lapses into normal teen speak when she is with her friends sometimes. Inspired by these books, Polly sets out to be the town matchmaker with very mixed results including one arrest, one tumble off of a pier (complete with jellyfish stings) and an angry suitor. This book is a fun remix of the two classics but we'd nudge the age recommendation to 11-15.Scones and Sensibility Overview

The Bialy Eaters: The Story of a Bread and a Lost World ReviewMimi Sheraton was fascinated by French Toast in Paris, Turkish Delight in Istanbul, Danish pastry in Copenhagen, Scotch Salmon in Glasgow, and Parma Ham in Parma. So why not hunt for the elusive Bialy in Bialystok? I am a Kossar's Bialy (Grand Street at Essex in NYC) afficionado, so I approached this book with a chip on my shoulder. But Mimi knows her stuff. She even studied the art of bialy making at Kossar's (she includes a Kossar based recipe in the book). Mimi Sheraton (formerly with The New York Times) took off on an adventure to Bialystok (which was once the home of 50,000 Jews), packing some bialys (bailystoker kuchen) for the trip with her husband, Dick Falcone. Her COBD, or Compulsive Obsessive Bialy Disorder, originated after a 1992 sidetrip from her Conde Nast Traveler assignment on Polish foods. After placing an ad seeking stories in the Bialystok Shtimme Yiddish newspaper, she sorts through the stories, and then visits Israel, Australia, Argentina, Paris, Lincolnwood, Scottsdale (jalapeno flavored), and NYC's Lower East Side over seven years, and creates this history (herstory) of the bialy and the community that is now lost. By the way, did you know that Bell Bialy of Canarsie Brooklyn ships 96,000 bagels and bialies to Japan's Hokushin Corp. each month (where they sell for over $1.10 each)? Or that bialy's should never be sliced like a bagel? Or that Jews created a settlement in Bialystok officially in 1558 and were granted citizenship in 1745. This is a fun read. The Professional Pastry Chef (3rd Edition) ReviewCovers basic Doughs (bread, cake, pastry) Breakfast stuff, cookies, tarts cakes, individual cakes (including charlottes), custard soufflee and mousse, ice Cream, decorating with chcolate and sugar, and others. About 1150 pages.
This is an awesome book. It costs twice as much as any other book, but it's worth it. This book gives you the hows,whys, and principles of everything which is nice. For example it has a chart showing how creme caramel, creme brule, pastry cream, sabayon, pots de creme are all just modified creme anglais. However it does assume that you know a little bit, so for a first book "the cake bible" "the pie/pastry bible" or "baking with julia" might be more suitable. You know that all of the recipes are tested. There are a few things to look out for however. The first is that you will have to scale down all of the recipes - they are written for bulk. The second is that the photos and recipes aren't put together or indexed well - you have to hunt for the recipe for a particular photo. But all in all, a terrific book, definitely worth the price.The Professional Pastry Chef (3rd Edition) Overview

My 11 year old daughter took this out of the library EVERY month since school started so I ordered it for her Easter Basket. Professional Baking ReviewI also had to purchase this book for culinary school. While this book can be difficult to understand, the quality of the instructor has a great deal to do with the user's comprehension of the subject matter. I find this an excellent book and continue to use it today (because I know how to make it work for me).

What a better match-up than muffins and sex. We all know that "sex" sells. So, why not combine it with "muffins". They are underrated and need to be "sexed" up. Hardly the case here in this book. The cover art and title are quite deceiving. The recipes are great, but if you were hoping for an entertaining way to drool over "yummy" muffin recipes served up by half-naked "studs", this is not that book. There are more recipes than studs, and most of the studs are clothed.
