Baking with the Cake Boss: 100 of Buddy's Best Recipes and Decorating Secrets ReviewBuddy Valastro says that this book would give a reader the same education as one who comes to work at his shop...well...with the exception of lack of firsthand experience - that's pretty true. Much of the book does give excellent advice and instructions and recipes for other goodies that would be found in his shop in addition to cakes. There are recipes for cookies, pastries, pies, tarts, cakes and cupcakes.
In his introduction Buddy tells how he started baking and then lets you in on how his kitchen is organized with information on equipment. There is a picture, but the items are not identified. Some novice cooks might need help there, as they would throughout the book; this is really not, especially in the cake section for beginning cooks. One could start in the cookie section and work their way up to the cakes if they were very determined, but as, he does state several times throughout the book one does need to practice. Ingredients are meticulously explored, as are the techniques
The recipes start with cookies, there are many pictures for many of the recipes and informative boxed off tips such as; soaking cakes, making doughnuts, shaping cannoli. A bit is told about each recipe. One of the first class features in the whole book are the excellent photos showing how to accomplish specific tasks and the instructions with them.
The cakes look marvelous and are not out of reach to create for a more practiced cook with some knowledge of making cakes and working with fondants and frosting. The instructions and diagrams again are outstanding.
There is a chart to devise your own cake combinations and the basic recipes for different cakes and frostings. Special cakes and their decorations are also detailed, such as; summer beach cake, and a Halloween Frankenstein cake
The recipes we have been especially pleased with so far are the; pignoli cookies, rugelach and Linzer tart cookies.
