Garfield, Odie and Jon stop at the bakery and find it mysteriously closed in the middle of the day. Pressing their faces to the glass, they spot the baker - and he's being held captive by giant gingerbread cookies! Garfield and Odie sneak in the back door, but when they're spotted, things get sticky. Fortunately, Garfield is a quick thinker and an awesome burper. He chows down on a pile of donuts and lets out a gingerbread-shattering burp. Out of gratitude, the rescued baker rewards Garfield with all the donuts he can eat.
All right, I know there are going to be parents who are utterly horrified by the giant-burp-as-a-weapon part. That's cool, just mosey on by and don't even consider buying this book. You might also want to avoid any other Garfield books because Garfield really is a low-class kind of cat. Garfield fans, however, will appreciate the pure genius that Garfield displays. The text, by Scott Nickel, is just about right for the 4 to 8 years old crowd. The illustrations, by Gary Barker and Larry Fentz, are typical Garfield: bright and funny, colorful and lively. The pages are thin cardboard, doubled, but the pop-ups are a single layer of thin cardboard, which makes them more likely to be torn easily.
