In the Night Kitchen (Caldecott Collection) ReviewI didn't want to give this book five stars. I fought against it, because I don't particularly enjoy the book. The illustrations aren't that attractive to me and it took me a while to get used to the rhythm of the words.
Having said that, I give this book five stars because my daughter LOVES this book. I sometimes have to hide it at night because I'm so tired of reading the "Mickey" book. Apparently Sendak knows an awful lot about what children like and how their minds work, because my daughter seldom tires of the story. (Her favorite part is when Mickey takes the measuring cup and goes up and up over the Milky Way.)
I'm honestly a little surprised over the "nekkid" controversy. It's not like the boy is drawn in explicit detail! My daughter's seen boy babies getting their diapers changed, so the concept of a penis is HARDLY frightening/startling/damaging to her. Geez, lighten up people!
Also, for those who were complaining about the concept of cake for breakfast, why don't we consider how many American children get French toast, pancakes, donuts, poptarts, or sugar-coated cereals for breakfast? Hardly nutritionally superior to cake, so I'm not lying in bed at night obsessing about the poor nutritional messages this book is sending to my child. :-)In the Night Kitchen (Caldecott Collection) Overview

Flowers for Algernon ReviewI read this book for school when I was in 7th grade, and just finished re-reading it ten years and a degree in biology later. I loved it when I was a teen, and (after forcing myself to ignore my instinctive scientific skepticism) still love it today.
It's a very thought-provoking story, all the more so when you consider that it was written about 40 years ago when society was a bit less tolerant of the mentally retarded than it is now. Charlie is a man in his 30s with an IQ of 68 when the book starts; through a controversial experimental operation, his IQ gets higher and higher until it soars at one point to 185. The story is told through the journal entries that he is told to keep for the researchers in charge of the study. Through Charlie's words, you can see how sharply his intellect grows and how difficult it is for him because as smart as he becomes, his *emotional* intelligence is still that of a child.
Charlie's emergence from ignorance is painful for him; imagine learning all of life's hard truth's in a matter of weeks rather than the normal development from innocent child to worldly adult. And the ending of the book is heartwrenching. Everyone should read "Flowers for Algernon" at some point in their life. It's a classic.Flowers for Algernon Overview

Kiss Yesterday Goodbye ReviewFrom the back cover: Time hadn't changed her feelings for Dane
There had always been a peculiarly bitter hatred between Jenny and her stepbrother, Dane Sutherland. She'd so much resented his influence with her father she had run away from home.
Now, five years later, she was back in Iowa, and apparently nothing had altered. Dane, not content with controlling the family, was trying to take over her father's business, too.
It didn't occur to her that there might be something more to her emotions than mere sibling rivalry ....
My thoughts: I like those forbidden love themes and stepbrother/stepsister is one of my families (sorry sue me =P) I liked the back and forth fighting/dialogue between the hero and heroine. I thought it was absolutely cute that the hero was so in love with the heroine way back when and even asked for her hand back then. Of course some of you might be like ewww pedophile (she was 15 when he realized he loved her and she was 17 when they had that "incident" and he was 22 I think) The heroine was ok too but I guess she was a little dense about the hero's feeling and her own feelings, LOL. It was a little annoying/mean of the heroine too to keep ragging on the hero for stealing/attempting to steal her family inheritance/taking over but of course there has to be a story. Anyhow, I love the story.Kiss Yesterday Goodbye Overview

Bake Sale ReviewSara Varon's "Bake Sale" is a 158 pages graphic novel that probably best for older children who could use their parents' kitchens to try out the recipes listed in the back. Actually there are eight recipes, two of them for frosting but only one has a separate listing. The recipes themselves are shows in two places -- either we see Cupcake making them and commenting on their ease or difficulty, or we see them at least mentioned in the story.
The story of Cupcake, his bakeshop and his quest to go with his friend Eggplant to meet a famous baker is the basic tale. Through this we see how small bakeries operate, how creative small business owners struggle to be, and how the person behind that morning coffee or cookie we may treat ourselves to might live beyond their store. Cupcake's emotions and life seem honest if a bit freaky.
Freaky because Varon has created a world in which food is the dominant lifeform. This is freaky on three levels. First, our main characters do not have real names, only what they are -- Eggplant, Cupcake, Potato, Sugar -- and so forth. Apparently there are many of the same kind of food and yet other names are never given. Second, these food people run the full gambit from living veggies and fruits to processed food like Sugar and Turkish Delight. Finally the most freakish aspect is that living food eats, grows, process, and cooks with food. It felt similar to a book about cannibals.
That is likely just me as an adult talking, I but most kids under the age of 12 could just see past that but don't be surprised if sensitive children are confused.Bake Sale Overview
