Sally Forth, Vile Curmudgeon ReviewThis extremely clever novel for kids and the rest of us will help improve vocabularies across the nation. And the world, for that matter, when it hits translation status. It is a wacky tale of Sal Silver, his family, lots of bears, various villains and a hero or two. A little magic, some juniper baguettes - this novel is a treat from beginning to end.Sally Forth, Vile Curmudgeon Overview

Sugar Cookie Murder (Hannah Swensen Holiday Mysteries) ReviewThis is my first book in the Hanna Swensen series and I'm not sure I will look for others.
I didn't realize what a huge genre of "cookbook mysteries" are out there! I picked up a bunch of paperbacks at a rummage sale and there were a half-dozen of these types of stories all by different authors. That said, "Sugar Cookie Murder" wasn't one of the better ones.
Since I haven't read any of the previous books in this series, I have only this book to base my opinions on and that might be unfair. However, this is supposed to be a stand-alone book.
Anyway, as several reviewers noted, the "mystery" was hardly a mystery at all. The climax was horribly disappointing -- a quick confession and bang, end of mystery. Apparently the cops did nothing but guard the doors and the detective sat in an office being cranky while Hannah and her sisters ran around and solved the "mystery". Almost all the action -- such as it was -- took place in the banquet hall and focused on describing food. Lots of food. With a few million references to how cold it gets in Minnesota and how everyone there can drive through a blizzard like it was a warm sunny day. Obviously there is a history between all the residents which, fortunately, wasn't too heavy-handed although it did get kind of confusing now and then.
I didn't particularly like the characters, either. Again, the shallowness of everyone might have been because it's part of a series and there was more character-building earlier on. But Hannah came off as a bit whiney, controlling and indecisive. She has two guys on a string -- one is too good to be true but kind of ordinary, the other is an obnoxious, self-serving cop who is apparently hot for his secretary and Hannah both making him a class-A jerk, but he's a hunk so Hannah seems to cozy up with him moreso than the other guy. But she uses the other guy whenever it suits her so she's not much better than the cop. The sisters seem two dimensional, the mother is a ditz and the rest of the cast are mere shadows on the wall.
The reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 (too bad sometimes you can't give 0 stars!) was because I am hoping/assuming the earlier books were better and this was just a filler book. If I run across more of Joanne Fluke's books at a rummage sale I might buy them but I'm sure I won't be spending full price -- paperback or hardcover -- for any of them.Sugar Cookie Murder (Hannah Swensen Holiday Mysteries) Overview

Blueberry Muffin Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewHoping to boost their winter economy, Lake Eden Minnesota is holding it's first annual Winter Carnival. Hannah Swensen is delighted about the extra revenue this will bring to her cookie shop. The town is thrilled to have Connie MacIntyre, celebrated TV chef and cookbook author, designing and baking their Winter Carnival cake. But when Connie Mac arrives, she quickly makes enemies with her overbearing personality. Hannah reluctantly agrees to let Connie use her shop to bake the cake, but arrives the next morning to find the cake burned and Connie face down in a tin of Hannah's Blue Blueberry Muffins. With her shop closed off as a crime scene and a very good friend, Connie Mac's personal assistant Janie, the prime suspect, Hannah starts investigating the murder. But can she provide the cookies for the carnival, solve the murder, and find Janie?
This is the third Hannah Swensen mystery, and the series has only gotten stronger. Hannah and her sister Andrea make a great detective team. All the supporting characters are back and used well in the plot. They're really starting to feel like good friends. I especially enjoyed watching the love triangle with dentist Norman and police detective Mike heat up. The mystery itself was very enjoyable. I had a hard time figuring out where this one was going, but the solution made perfect sense. And the climax kept me glued to the book trying to figure out how Hannah would escape with her life. There are 7 more delicious sounding recipes included. Someday I'm going to make them.
My only complaint with the book was that it ended too soon. If you're already a fan of the series, you'll love this book. If you have yet to meet Hannah, start with the first, Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, and enjoy this delightful culinary themed mystery series.Blueberry Muffin Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) Overview

Peach Cobbler Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewIt's no secret to Hannah's friends that Hannah is no fan of Shawna Lee Quinn. But that's especially true since Shawna opened the Magnolia Blossom Bakery right across the street from Hannah's own shop. Business is looking pretty poor, and if things don't change soon, Hannah and Lisa might have to close their doors.
On a happier note, Lisa and Herb's wedding day has finally arrived. So what if Shawna Lee has promised to bring her famous peach cobbler to the reception. It's only a minor dark cloud on an otherwise bright day. But Shawna Lee never makes it to the reception. Running by the bakeries afterward, Hannah finds Shawna Lee's dead body. With one of the best motives in town, Hannah knows she's got to act fast to make sure she doesn't wind up behind bars for a crime she didn't commit. But with most of the town at the wedding, who could have committed the murder?
Reading Sugar Cookie Murder, I thought to myself that Shawna Lee would make a great murder victim. Obviously great minds think alike. While the murder aspect starts out a little slowly, I really didn't mind because there was still plenty going on with these friends. And once Hannah finds the body, things really begin to pick up. Clues lead to a place I never would have imagined, but is absolute genius.
Any fan of the series will be pleased with the latest entry. If you aren't, I do recommend starting at the beginning since you really need to read them in order to gain the full appreciation of the characters. I can't wait to visit with them again.Peach Cobbler Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) OverviewWith The Cookie Jar, Hannah Swensen has a mouthwatering monopoly on the bakery business of Lake Eden, Minnesota. But when a rival store opens, tensions begin to bubble... As she sits in her nearly empty store on Groundhog Day, Hannah can only hope that spring is just around the corner--and that the popularity of the new Magnolia Blossom Bakery is just a passing fad. The southern hospitality of Lake Eden's two Georgia transplants, Shawna Lee and Vanessa Quinn, is grating on Hannah's nerves--and cutting into her profits. At least Hannah has her business partner Lisa's wedding to look forward to. Unfortunately, Shawna Lee has finagled an invitation to the reception--and is bringing her Southern Peach Cobbler for the dessert table. Things go from bad to worse when Shawna Lee and Hannah's sometime-boyfriend, Detective Mike Kingston, are no-shows to the wedding. When Hannah sees lights on at the Magnolia Blossom Bakery after the reception, she investigates--and finds Shawna Lee shot to death. Everyone in town knew the Cookie Jar's business was suffering--a fact that puts Hannah at the top of the initial list of suspects. But with a little help from her friends, Hannah's determined to track down whoever had the right ingredients to whip up a murder. . . Includes 10 Original Dessert Recipes For You To Try!

Fudge Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewHannah's life is very full. Not only is she juggling the demands of running The Cookie Jar, but her brother-in-law is running for sheriff in a very tight race and she's trying to organize the recipes for the Lake Eden cookbook. One night, as she's taking the trash out after her potluck cooking class (a convenient way to test all the recipes to make sure they're right before the book goes to print), she finds the body of Sheriff Grant in the dumpster. Now Bill is suspended from work because he's a suspect, and Hannah must clear him by finding the killer before he drives the very pregnant Andrea crazy cleaning out their house. This also adds major complications to Hannah's relationship with Bill's partner Mike. Meanwhile, her mother is acting strangely, and she needs to get her cat to eat his senior cat food. And she's searching for the missing ingredient in Mrs. Koester's fudge cupcake recipe so it can make the book. Can Hannah juggle all these competing demands?
Needless to say, there's never a dull moment in this book. There are a few times when the murder investigation seems to stall briefly, but the other sub-plots take up the slack. Frankly, I hardly noticed because there is so much else happening. The mystery does progress well, with an ending I figured out a little before Hannah, but not by much. All the characters we've come to love are back, and it's definitely a wonderful visit with old friends. This book contains 10 delicious sounding recipes. (A word about the title recipe. The first edition contains an error. It should read 1 1/2 teaspoons baking POWDER not baking soda. This will be fixed in all future editions.)
Is it possible to get the warm fuzzies from a murder mystery? If so, this is the series to do it. If you like your murder served cozy, look no further then this fun series.Fudge Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) Overview

Bake Sale ReviewSara Varon's "Bake Sale" is a 158 pages graphic novel that probably best for older children who could use their parents' kitchens to try out the recipes listed in the back. Actually there are eight recipes, two of them for frosting but only one has a separate listing. The recipes themselves are shows in two places -- either we see Cupcake making them and commenting on their ease or difficulty, or we see them at least mentioned in the story.
The story of Cupcake, his bakeshop and his quest to go with his friend Eggplant to meet a famous baker is the basic tale. Through this we see how small bakeries operate, how creative small business owners struggle to be, and how the person behind that morning coffee or cookie we may treat ourselves to might live beyond their store. Cupcake's emotions and life seem honest if a bit freaky.
Freaky because Varon has created a world in which food is the dominant lifeform. This is freaky on three levels. First, our main characters do not have real names, only what they are -- Eggplant, Cupcake, Potato, Sugar -- and so forth. Apparently there are many of the same kind of food and yet other names are never given. Second, these food people run the full gambit from living veggies and fruits to processed food like Sugar and Turkish Delight. Finally the most freakish aspect is that living food eats, grows, process, and cooks with food. It felt similar to a book about cannibals.
That is likely just me as an adult talking, I but most kids under the age of 12 could just see past that but don't be surprised if sensitive children are confused.Bake Sale Overview

A Dollar Short: The Bottom Dollar Girls Go Hollywood ReviewThe Bottom Dollar Girls are back and better than ever. In this second book of the series, Chiffon's philandering husband Lonnie goes to California to be a movie extra and falls for the leading lady. The tabloids have a field-day reporting all of the details of their romance, while Chiffon loses her job, sprains her ankle, and tries to hold things together on the home front. Although Chiffon and her sister Chenille are not close, Chenille has also lost her job and she comes back to Cayboo Creek to help out her sister. Although their relationship is rocky at first, the sisters overcome their past animosities and stand together in the face of their over-critical mother and men who try to take advantage of them. The humorous sayings at the beginning of each chapter are worth the price of the book, and feel-good story is loaded with Southern humor and charm.A Dollar Short: The Bottom Dollar Girls Go Hollywood Overview

Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter ReviewThis is a delightful book. It took so many experiences of relocating and shed a very humorous light on them. I learned so much about Vermont, B&B's, and running a restaurant.
While from the South, I found the references to Southern ways to be so very true, we need to giggle at ourselves sometimes.
I found the universal truths in the book to come from the character development of many of the characters, but especially LeeLee. I could so relate to her in the way that she had to pull it together for her family's survival and in the process became a stronger person. Each of the main characters developed as the story unfolded, again making this book so relevant at so many levels.
I truly enjoyed reading a book that was related to real life and made me laugh at the true reality of it all!Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter Overview
