Dress Rehearsal ReviewLauren is the Vera Wang of wedding cake design. She owns a hip boutique and has an uncanny knack for determining a couples' potential for staying together based on the cake that they choose. Her best friend after all chose the wrong cake and ultimately the wrong groom. When her other close friend makes a near disastrous decision, it is up to Lauren to rescue her from making the same mistake.
Enter ex-boyfriend Neil. He and his fiance show up at her boutique and he chooses the cake that Lauren has already determined will be her cake. Did she make a mistake eight years ago when she sent Neil packing? Despite being in the early throes of a new relationship with marriage-shy divorce lawyer Charlie (who she has so much in common with, including clients), Lauren entertains the idea of pursuing a relationship with Neil before he ties the knot. At the same time, she is trying to launch a wedding cake book, set her friend Paige up with a more appropriate guy, deal with a temperamental head cook, and determine if happily ever after means marriage.
Witty and insightful, I thoroughly enjoyed the book, except for that ambiguous ending. It just seemed to be missing something!Dress Rehearsal Overview

Bake Sale ReviewSara Varon's "Bake Sale" is a 158 pages graphic novel that probably best for older children who could use their parents' kitchens to try out the recipes listed in the back. Actually there are eight recipes, two of them for frosting but only one has a separate listing. The recipes themselves are shows in two places -- either we see Cupcake making them and commenting on their ease or difficulty, or we see them at least mentioned in the story.
The story of Cupcake, his bakeshop and his quest to go with his friend Eggplant to meet a famous baker is the basic tale. Through this we see how small bakeries operate, how creative small business owners struggle to be, and how the person behind that morning coffee or cookie we may treat ourselves to might live beyond their store. Cupcake's emotions and life seem honest if a bit freaky.
Freaky because Varon has created a world in which food is the dominant lifeform. This is freaky on three levels. First, our main characters do not have real names, only what they are -- Eggplant, Cupcake, Potato, Sugar -- and so forth. Apparently there are many of the same kind of food and yet other names are never given. Second, these food people run the full gambit from living veggies and fruits to processed food like Sugar and Turkish Delight. Finally the most freakish aspect is that living food eats, grows, process, and cooks with food. It felt similar to a book about cannibals.
That is likely just me as an adult talking, I but most kids under the age of 12 could just see past that but don't be surprised if sensitive children are confused.Bake Sale Overview

Sprinkles and Secrets ReviewSophie and Isabel are best friends, but they each have their own passion. Sophie's passion lies in acting; Isabel, baking.
Sophie has been offered an opportunity of a lifetime - to star in a national commercial. The company she would represent happens to be the rival to Isabel's family cupcake shop.
Sophie cannot bring herself to tell her best friend, but can she bring herself to give up such an opportunity? Can their friendship survive the big secret?
Sophie's character is well-developed and interesting. The plot is nicely paced, and there are several heart-warming and giggle-worthy moments that kept me turning the page, wanting more.
Reminiscent of Beverly Cleary, this novel brings wholesome storytelling to a modern audience. Schroeder has hit it out of the park in this follow-up novel.Sprinkles and Secrets Overview

It's Raining Cupcakes ReviewThis had the start of a great book for young girls, with our "Chickarita" named Isabel, being a creative thinker in that in her desire to see the big world that seemed to escape her, she entered a cupcake contest in the hopes of being able to win her a first trip out of her small town.
The writing is very good and the words and thoughts that flowed from the pen of author Lisa Schroeder made you feel that she was able to truly understand the minds of young ladies. The tight bond of friendship between Isabel and her best bud, Sophie, was perfect, and their personalities played off each other as fresh and natural as they were meant to be.
But two points within the story struck me as really not fitting in and which I would have preferred that they had been taken into another direction. The first and the greater of the two was the underlying current of depression and/or paralyzing fear/pessimism that Isabel's mother seemed to be fighting throughout most of the story. I felt that an otherwise great storyline had been overshadowed by the fact that a young girl had to grow up and mature faster than she needed because of her feeling of needing to mentally care for her mother. It was a bit like mom and daughter changing roles. Perhaps in another book which focused on the subject of this sort, this would have been an appropriate storyline. But for what I thought was a lighthearted and innocent adventure for young Isabel, it turned into more angst in both her trying to work towards her dream yet having to become way too grown up in thought and action, by way of being her mothers caretaker of sorts.
In my own opinion, in this modern age of making our children grow up before they are either naturally or emotionally ready, a good book in the writing vein of Beverly Cleary or Louisa May Alcott would be what I would want kids to read and enjoy. Typical kid stuff and kid situations that are resolved in a kid's time, using the imagination that children have naturally, to understand and help their minds grow.
But instead, Isabel is a little woman, having to have grown up sooner than necessary because of her worry over her mom. Yes there is a dad and maternal grandmother involved and their parts are appropriate and relevant to the storyline, but perhaps in another story that was meant for a more serious teaching lesson.
OK............the second thing. When writing a feel-good book, I would like a resolved ending one way or the other. This one did not have one. It basically got you excited for our young Izzy, after all her work and hope and energy, and then you're left hanging, wondering how her situation came out.
Well, like it or not, these are my thoughts and I'm sticking to them. All due respect to Ms. Schroeder, as she writes very charmingly, but for little girls, I would like them to enjoy childhood as much as possible and leave the angst for when they're a bit older. Peace! It's Raining Cupcakes Overview

Sweet Talk (Bakery Sisters) ReviewClaire, a concert pianist on tour since the age of 6, comes home at the request of sister Jesse to take care of third sister Nicole (Claire's fraternal twin) who needs an operation and somebody to care for her during recovery. Nicole hasn't spoken or had contact with Claire for 20 years because she blames Claire for ruining her life (blames Claire for their Mothers' death) - won't take calls, answer mail - invite Claire to her wedding(she is currently separated from husband Drew). Nicole is also not speaking to sister Jesse and plans to never forgive her for a mistake that Jesse recently made, on top of inviting Claire to come and care for Nicole. Wyatt, Nicole's good friend, but no sexual chemistry with Nicole, is a single father who vows never to have another "relationship" with a woman other than casual sex. Nicole has filled Wyatt's head with hateful descriptions of Claire for years, so Wyatt has an immediate dislike for Claire when she arrives to care for Nicole and try to mend the familial fences. Claire and Wyatt are the love interests.
There was absolutely no "Sweet Talk" in this latest offering by Susan Mallery. While I have loved all of her previous books, this one offered chapter after chapter of of one sister declaring "you ruined my life" louder than the next. These characters are so very immature, shallow and thoroughly dislikable that you don't care for them even after they get together. I kept hoping that the sisters would open their eyes, grow up and start acting like adults, unfortunately, that didn't happen. The dysfunction of this family is front and center from individual issues through relationship issues. There wasn't even any good romance with only two very short sexual encounters between Claire and Wyatt. The rest of the book was hashing and re-hashing, but not dealing with, the "you ruined my life" themes. This was not a fun read.Sweet Talk (Bakery Sisters) Overview

Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery) ReviewWho knew cupcakes were so dangerous? This fun, well-plotted mystery centers around two best friends, Melanie and Angie, who've just started a cupcake business, and are set to cater the wedding of their longtime male friend, Tate, whose fiance, fashion designer Christie, is, to put it mildly, not well-liked by almost anyone save for her fiance and one fawning assistant. When she insists on owning control over the original cupcake flavors that Fairy Tale Cupcakes is making, they almost balk, but agree...until she winds up dead, with a cupcake in her hand. This wreaks havoc on their business and Mel decides she's going to find out who the culprit is to save her business, and her reputation since rumors are swirling that she was the one with the fatal cupcake.
This is a page turner that certainly kept me guessing, and the horrors of Christie's manipulation are related with an almost gleeful detail. The author's done her homework on what it takes to run a cupcake bakery, and there's an entertaining rivalry with another shop (complete with frosting splattering!) as well as cupcake recipes at the end. A very promising start to this mystery series; I look forward to reading the rest!Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery) Overview

Taking Care of Moses ReviewBarbara O'Connor writes beautifully sensitive stories with great big helpings of humor and humanity. She creates characters, settings, and situations that live on in the reader's mind and heart long after the reader reluctantly closes the book. In TAKING CARE OF MOSES, one noble child (Randall) struggles with his conscience, wondering what's right, as he secretly feels torn between two good impulses. All the while, sympathetic and engaging characters dance around the storyline, adding humor and realism to the story. From beginning to end, this is a great read!Taking Care of Moses Overview
